Richards Bay chairman Jomo Biyela has issued an apology to football supporters following the sudden change of venue for the highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
The fixture was initially scheduled to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, a venue capable of accommodating a large crowd. However, the match has now been moved to Princess Magogo Stadium, leaving some supporters disappointed and frustrated by the late change.
Biyela acknowledged the concerns surrounding the decision and recognised the importance of the fixture, particularly given Kaizer Chiefs’ massive support base.
“We would like to apologise to the football fans. We also know how much the club that we will play against is supported and big,” Biyela said.
Despite the disappointment surrounding the venue switch, the Richards Bay chairman stressed that the most important factor is that the match will still be played in Durban.
“What’s important is that the match remains in Durban,” he added.
The fixture is expected to attract significant attention, with Kaizer Chiefs supporters likely to travel in numbers to support Amakhosi. The move to Princess Magogo Stadium could create a different atmosphere from what fans expected at Moses Mabhida Stadium, but the anticipation surrounding the encounter remains high.
For Richards Bay, the match represents an important opportunity to compete against one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs, while Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to produce a strong performance away from home.
The two sides are scheduled to meet on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at 19:30. Despite the unexpected venue change, supporters can expect a highly competitive encounter as both clubs prepare for an important night of football in Durban.
Biyela’s apology is likely to reassure supporters that Richards Bay understands their frustrations, while the club continues preparations to ensure the fixture goes ahead successfully at the new venue.
