Mbokazi has questioned whether Pitso Mosimane will be able to last as Bafana Bafana coach, pointing specifically to the way he conducts himself during media engagements.
“Coach Mosimane won’t last as Bafana Bafana coach because he can’t conduct himself properly during media press conferences,” Mbokazi said.
According to Mbokazi, being the coach of the national team comes with enormous responsibility, not only on the football pitch but also in front of the media and the public. He believes that every statement made by the national-team coach is closely followed by supporters, journalists and football officials.
Mbokazi argued that Mosimane’s outspoken personality could become a problem if he continues to engage heavily with criticism or media questions. He believes that the Bafana Bafana coach needs to remain focused on the team, the players and the results rather than allowing off-field conversations to dominate the headlines.
“Bafana Bafana is bigger than any individual. When you are the national-team coach, you have to understand that everything you say will be analysed. You cannot afford to create unnecessary distractions,” Mbokazi said.
He added that Mosimane will face intense pressure because expectations surrounding the national team are extremely high. Supporters want to see positive results, strong performances and progress in major competitions. At the same time, the coach will have to deal with difficult questions about player selections, tactics, squad changes and performances.
Mbokazi believes that Mosimane’s experience gives him the knowledge to handle pressure, but maintaining discipline during media engagements will be equally important.
“Experience is important, but communication is also important. You can be a very good coach, but if your relationship with the media constantly becomes a problem, it can eventually affect the environment around the team,” he said.
The comments are likely to generate debate among South African football supporters, particularly because Mosimane has a strong reputation and a large following in the country.
For Mbokazi, however, the message is clear: Mosimane must find the right balance between being outspoken and maintaining professionalism whenever he represents Bafana Bafana in public.
