Kaizer Chiefs could have had Emile Witbooi in their ranks from a very young age, but a decision made during his early development meant the club eventually lost the opportunity to secure one of South Africa’s promising young talents.
Dillan Sheppard has revealed details about Witbooi’s early connection with Chiefs, explaining that the youngster was brought to the club for an assessment when he was still very young. Although Chiefs had seen something in his ability, the club did not immediately move forward with bringing him back.
According to Sheppard, he later approached then-Technical Director Walter Steenbok and suggested that Chiefs should take another look at Witbooi. However, Steenbok reportedly reminded him that the club had previously decided not to take the youngster, meaning he was no longer available to them.
Sheppard recalled the moment, saying: “Emile was once with us. I remember he came for assessment, but he was very, very young.”
He explained that he later asked for Witbooi to be brought back, only to be told: “No, you guys didn’t take him, so he’s gone now.”
The revelation has sparked discussion among supporters about what could have happened if Chiefs had acted differently during Witbooi’s early years.
Football development is often decided by small moments, and this appears to be one of those situations. Chiefs had an early opportunity to assess Witbooi, but ultimately did not secure his return.
Today, the story serves as a reminder that youth development decisions can have consequences years later. 🇿🇦🔥💛🖤
