Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has reportedly raised serious questions about the club’s decision to strengthen their midfield with the signing of Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, arguing that the move may not have been necessary given the options already available within the squad.
Khumalo’s assessment is likely to spark debate among Amakhosi supporters, particularly those who expected the club to make strategic additions during the transfer window. According to the former Bafana Bafana star’s view, Chiefs could have invested their resources in areas where the squad genuinely required reinforcements instead of bringing in another midfielder.
The criticism centres on the belief that Chiefs already possess players capable of contributing effectively in midfield. Rather than adding another option to an already competitive department, Khumalo feels the club could have focused on improving positions where there is a greater need for quality and depth.
For a club of Kaizer Chiefs’ stature, every signing comes with significant expectations. New arrivals are expected to make an immediate impact, improve competition for places and ultimately help the team compete for major trophies. If a player struggles to establish himself or fails to offer something different from the existing squad, questions over the value of the transfer are naturally going to follow.
Bitegeko, however, will have an opportunity to prove his critics wrong on the pitch. Football is ultimately decided by performances, and the midfielder will be judged by what he produces once given opportunities to represent the club. The pressure will be even greater because of the expectations surrounding Chiefs and the scrutiny that comes with playing for one of South Africa’s biggest football institutions.
Khumalo’s comments therefore present a challenging message for both the player and the club’s technical team. While some supporters may agree that Chiefs already have better midfield options, others will argue that new signings deserve time to adapt before being judged.
Ultimately, the responsibility now rests with Bitegeko to demonstrate that his arrival was justified. If he can establish himself as an important player and contribute to Chiefs’ ambitions, the criticism will quickly become a thing of the past. If not, Khumalo’s warning may become an uncomfortable talking point throughout the season.
