Kaizer Chiefs News: Da Cruz Ultimatum, Ngcobo Dilemma
Kaizer Chiefs may have made an unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, but there are already important questions surrounding Fernando Da Cruz and the future of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.
Da Cruz has collected seven points from Chiefs’ opening three league matches, with victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune United followed by a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns. However, the early exit from the MTN8 has already denied the coach an opportunity to compete for one piece of silverware.
Da Cruz facing expectations
The pressure at Naturena is not simply about remaining unbeaten. The Chiefs board is reportedly expecting Da Cruz to take the club back towards the top end of the Premiership, with a runners-up finish seen as an important benchmark.
Success in a cup competition will also be a major objective, particularly after Chiefs were knocked out of the MTN8 by Golden Arrows in the quarter-finals.
The French coach has already made it clear that he wants to improve the squad, particularly in attacking areas. Earlier in the season, Da Cruz identified the need for additional offensive options as part of his plans for the team.
For now, however, the results in the league have given him a positive platform. Chiefs will next travel to face Richards Bay on Wednesday, 26 August, looking to maintain their unbeaten start.
Ngcobo dilemma grows
While Da Cruz’s position is being watched, another issue is developing within the squad.
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was an unused substitute during the 1-1 draw against Sundowns, raising fresh questions about his role under the new coach.
The midfielder has endured several injury-hit seasons. After making 25 league appearances and scoring four goals in 2020/21, his league appearances subsequently dropped to 16, 13, 12 and 11 before improving to 16 last season. His goalscoring output has also declined, with only two goals across his last three Betway Premiership campaigns combined.
That leaves Da Cruz with a difficult decision: give Ngcobo another opportunity to prove himself, or move forward with other midfield options.
Ngcobo has shown flashes of quality when fit, but consistency and availability have become major concerns. His situation could become one of the most interesting selection battles at Chiefs as the season develops.
With Richards Bay next on the schedule, Da Cruz now has another chance to show what direction he wants to take the team—and whether Ngcobo remains part of his plans.
For Chiefs supporters, the unbeaten league start is encouraging. But the real test of the Da Cruz era may come when expectations rise and difficult squad decisions have to be made. 🟡⚫
