Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz is reportedly considering a tactical change that could see two of the club’s exciting young talents, Langelihle Phili and Mfundo Vilakazi, take up more central attacking roles rather than continuing to operate primarily from the wings.
The French coach is believed to be exploring the possibility of using both players as attacking midfielders, a move that could give them greater freedom to influence matches in the final third. Rather than keeping them restricted to wide areas, Da Cruz could position them closer to the striker, where their creativity, technical ability and movement could become even more influential.
Phili has shown qualities that could make him effective in a central attacking position. His ability to carry the ball, combine with teammates and create opportunities could allow him to operate between the opposition midfield and defence. Playing centrally would also give him more opportunities to receive the ball in dangerous areas and become directly involved in the club’s attacking build-up.
Vilakazi, meanwhile, is another player who could benefit significantly from the proposed tactical adjustment. The talented youngster has demonstrated confidence, flair and an ability to take on defenders. Moving him into the number 10 role could allow him to play with greater freedom and use his creativity without being constantly required to stay close to the touchline.
Da Cruz’s plan could also provide Kaizer Chiefs with greater tactical flexibility. Having players capable of operating both centrally and on the wings would make the team less predictable and allow the coach to change the shape of the attack depending on the opposition.
