Kaizer Chiefs have received an encouraging boost regarding Rushwin Dortley, with the defender reportedly making significant progress in his long-awaited return to competitive football.
Dortley has been working his way back after a lengthy injury absence and has recently spent time with the Kaizer Chiefs Development/Diski Challenge squad as part of his preparation. The move has allowed the defender to build up his match fitness and regain his rhythm in a controlled environment.
The 24-year-old centre-back has not played competitive football for around 18 months after suffering a serious knee injury in March 2025. His recovery has included surgery and several setbacks, forcing the club to take an extremely cautious approach to his comeback. (Goal)
The latest progress will therefore come as welcome news to Amakhosi supporters.
Dortley is understood to be getting closer to the level required to compete for a place in Fernando Da Cruz’s first-team squad. His time with the Development side is an important part of that process, giving him an opportunity to increase his workload and rebuild the confidence required after such a long period on the sidelines.
Da Cruz has previously stressed that Chiefs will not rush the defender back. The coach explained that Dortley had undergone two surgeries and that the club needed to manage his return carefully to avoid another setback. (Goal)
The Chiefs coach also knows the quality Dortley can bring to the squad. Before his injury, the defender had established himself as one of the club’s promising young defenders and had also earned recognition at international level with Bafana Bafana.
If he continues progressing without complications, Dortley could eventually provide Da Cruz with another important defensive option. His ability to operate at centre-back, particularly from the left side, could give Chiefs greater balance and depth at the back.
For now, the priority remains his fitness rather than rushing him into competitive action. After such a long absence, every training session and match with the Development squad represents another step forward.
For Amakhosi supporters, however, there is plenty to be excited about. A fully fit Rushwin Dortley could feel like a new signing for Kaizer Chiefs, and his eventual return to the first team could provide a major boost to Da Cruz’s squad.
