Arsenal legend Thierry Henry speaks about Mfundo Vilakazi and Thapelo Mokobodi

“When I watched the Soweto Derby yesterday, there were two young players who really caught my attention. I’m talking about Mfundo Vilakazi and Thapelo Mokobodi. Honestly, I was impressed by what I saw from these two boys. Their confidence, energy, movement and willingness to take responsibility on the pitch were outstanding.

We all understand the pressure that comes with playing in a match of this magnitude. The Soweto Derby is one of the biggest football occasions in Africa. Millions of people follow this match, and the expectations are always extremely high. However, what impressed me most about these two young players was their confidence and the way they handled themselves under pressure.

Mfundo Vilakazi is a special talent. I love the way he plays football, his creativity, confidence on the ball and willingness to take on opponents. He is still young, but you can already see that he has enormous potential.

Thapelo Mokobodi also deserves recognition. I enjoyed watching his performance, his determination, discipline and contribution to the team. He showed qualities that every young footballer should aspire to develop.

For me, South Africa has a very bright footballing future. There is genuine talent in this country, and players like Vilakazi and Mokobodi are examples of what the next generation can achieve.

If these boys continue performing at this level, remain consistent and keep improving, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. They have the potential to compete at a much higher level.

My message to both of them is simple: never change your attitude. Stay humble, remain disciplined, work hard every day and never stop believing in yourselves. Talent alone is not enough; dedication and consistency will determine how far you go.

I genuinely enjoyed watching these two boys yesterday. South Africa must protect and develop its young talents because the future of football in this country looks very promising.”
