Aden McCarthy Reveals Kaizer Chiefs Almost Blocked His Move to Sabah FK

Aden McCarthy has revealed that his move to Malaysian club Sabah FK was nearly complicated by his contractual situation at Kaizer Chiefs, with the defender indicating that his contract with Amakhosi had not yet expired when the opportunity to move abroad emerged.

The young South African defender, who previously represented Kaizer Chiefs, has taken an important step in his career by moving to Sabah FK, where he will be looking to gain valuable experience, continue developing his abilities and establish himself in a new football environment.

However, according to McCarthy, completing the move was not as straightforward as it might have appeared. His revelation suggests that the outstanding contractual situation at Naturena created a potential obstacle, raising questions about how the transfer would be finalised while he was still under contract with the Soweto giants.

In professional football, a player cannot ordinarily leave a club freely while still bound by an active contract unless the parties reach an agreement or another applicable contractual arrangement allows the transfer to proceed. Such situations can require negotiations between the player, his representatives and the clubs involved before a move can be completed.

For McCarthy, the opportunity to join Sabah FK represents a chance to broaden his footballing horizons and test himself outside South Africa. Playing in a different league could provide him with valuable exposure, new challenges and an opportunity to demonstrate his quality on an international stage.

Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, have continued to attract attention regarding the movement of players in and out of the club, particularly as supporters closely follow the progress of former Amakhosi players pursuing opportunities abroad.

McCarthy’s comments also highlight the importance of contractual clarity when players consider new opportunities. Although the situation reportedly threatened to complicate his departure, the defender ultimately moved forward with his career at Sabah FK.

For the young centre-back, the focus will now be on making the most of his opportunity in Malaysia, delivering consistent performances and proving that he has what it takes to succeed beyond South African football.

His revelation provides another interesting chapter in the career of a player who is now looking to build his future away from Naturena.
