Pitso Mosimane’s reported comments about Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng have sparked discussion around the importance of teamwork, sharing responsibility and respecting the legends of South African football.
Speaking about Appollis’ three assists, Mosimane reportedly said that the player must “donate” his assists to Modiba in order to accommodate him. He emphasised that no individual should be allowed to enjoy all the assists, arguing that players must create opportunities for one another. He further stressed that this is the national team and not Orlando Pirates, highlighting the importance of unity within Bafana Bafana.
Mosimane’s comments also extended to Mofokeng, with the suggestion that the young attacker’s goals should also be “donated” to Zwane. According to the statement, Zwane is regarded as a legend of South African football, and younger players should remember and respect those who came before them.
The broader message behind the comments is centred on building a strong team environment where individual achievements are viewed as part of a collective effort. Rather than focusing exclusively on personal statistics, players are encouraged to accommodate one another and ensure that everyone contributes to the success of the team.
“If Appollis makes three assists, Modiba must benefit. If Mofokeng scores, Zwane must benefit. That is how we build a family,” the statement reads.
The comments have inevitably raised questions about individual recognition versus collective responsibility, while reinforcing the importance of unity, respect and togetherness within the national team.
