Rele Mofokeng Names His Combined Soweto Giants Five-a-Side Team

Rele Mofokeng has offered an interesting glimpse into how he would assemble a five-a-side team featuring players from South Africa’s two biggest Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

During a recent interview, Mofokeng was asked to select his ideal five-a-side combination from the two clubs. His choices sparked plenty of discussion, particularly because the young midfielder had to leave out several established names from both teams.

In goal, Mofokeng selected Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates, giving the Buccaneers the responsibility of protecting the team’s goal. Chaine has established himself as an important figure between the posts, and his inclusion reflects the confidence Mofokeng has in his ability to provide stability at the back.

For the defensive positions, Mofokeng chose Seema and Hotto, creating a combination that would bring physicality, experience and defensive strength to the side. The selections demonstrate Mofokeng’s preference for players who can contribute both defensively and during transitions.

In midfield, Mofokeng picked Kaizer Chiefs players Lebohang Maboe and Sibongiseni Mthethwa. The pair would provide energy, ball retention and defensive cover while also helping the team move the ball forward.

Leading the attack, Mofokeng selected Mbuthuma as his forward. The striker would be expected to provide the finishing touch and occupy the opposition defence in the compact five-a-side format.

Mofokeng also revealed his substitutes, selecting a mixture of young talent and players capable of changing the game. His bench included Kaizer Chiefs youngster Mfundo Vilakazi, alongside Padime, Radiopane and Faiz Abrahams.

The selection has generated interest among supporters because of the different combinations it creates between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates players. With both clubs boasting talented squads, choosing only a handful of players was always going to be a difficult task.

Mofokeng’s choices ultimately provide an intriguing look at the players he believes could complement each other in a fast-paced five-a-side environment. The inclusion of both experienced players and emerging talents also highlights the depth of quality available across the two Soweto giants.
