Lebohang Maboe is officially back in the Bafana Bafana setup after being named in Pitso Mosimane’s final 30-man squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has earned his recall following a strong start to the season, with his recent performances at club level catching the attention of the new Bafana coach. Maboe has been included among the midfield options alongside Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Sphephelo Sithole and Brooklyn Poggenpoel.
Maboe’s return represents another opportunity for the experienced midfielder to contribute on the international stage. His inclusion comes after he was previously part of the preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but did not make the final selection.
Bafana Bafana will begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign against Guinea on 26 September before facing Eritrea on 30 September. The team will then conclude the international window with a friendly against Egypt on 4 October.
For Maboe, the upcoming qualifiers could be an important moment as he looks to make his presence felt in the national team once again. His experience, versatility and ability to contribute in midfield will give Mosimane another option as South Africa begins its journey towards the next AFCON tournament.
The Kaizer Chiefs star will now turn his attention to Bafana Bafana duty, with South Africa aiming to start the qualifying campaign strongly.
