Former Orlando Pirates star finally told the media who made him leave the club

Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi’s departure from Orlando Pirates has opened a new chapter in a story that was marked by both success and reported tension during his final period at the club.

Maswanganyi, who became an important figure at Pirates after joining from SuperSport United, eventually completed his move to Bahrain Premier League side Al-Khaldiya. His departure came after a period in which his relationship with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou reportedly became increasingly difficult.

Reports surrounding the situation have highlighted differences between the player and the coaching staff, particularly regarding training standards, tactical expectations and Maswanganyi’s role on the pitch. Ouaddou himself acknowledged that the relationship did not have an easy beginning, saying there were “difficult moments” before the two eventually found a better understanding.

There was also further speculation surrounding Maswanganyi’s future when he was left out of the squad for Pirates’ MTN8 semi-final first leg against Sekhukhune United. At the time, Ouaddou confirmed that the player was fit and available but declined to provide details about the situation.

The circumstances surrounding his departure have therefore attracted significant attention from Pirates supporters, particularly because Maswanganyi had been part of a successful team and was regarded as one of the club’s talented attacking players.

While claims that Maswanganyi personally told the media that Ouaddou and the technical team’s treatment forced him to leave should be treated as an allegation unless supported by a direct interview or recording, the public record does confirm that there were tensions between the player and coach.

Ouaddou has since acknowledged the difficulty of losing Maswanganyi, describing him as a gifted player and one whose departure leaves Pirates needing to rebuild around different profiles.

For Maswanganyi, the move to Bahrain represents a fresh start after a complicated final chapter at Orlando Pirates.
