Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly making moves behind the scenes as they continue to strengthen their squad under head coach Fernando Da Cruz. The Glamour Boys have already been active in the transfer market this season, adding several players as they look to build a competitive team capable of challenging for silverware.
The latest transfer talk has created plenty of excitement among Amakhosi supporters, with the club believed to have identified an experienced Premier Soccer League defender as a player who could add more quality and competition to the squad. The player has also attracted reported interest from Mamelodi Sundowns, making the situation even more interesting.
According to the claim, Kaizer Chiefs have already broken the bank for Deano van Rooyen, with an alleged R18 million package reportedly involved and a contract said to have been signed. Fernando Da Cruz is also claimed to have been determined to secure the defender before Sundowns could make their move, with the coach allegedly saying: “I wanted us to snatch him from Sundowns fast before they snatch him.”
Van Rooyen is a right-back who joined Orlando Pirates from Stellenbosch in 2024. His experience in the PSL makes him an attractive option for clubs looking for defensive reinforcements. Previous reporting has placed his transfer from Stellenbosch to Pirates at around R8 million, although local transfer fees are often not officially disclosed.
However, the reported R18 million Chiefs deal and contract signing have not been independently confirmed by Kaizer Chiefs or other authoritative sources at the time of writing. In fact, Da Cruz recently stated that he was happy with his current squad and was not requesting new players, while leaving the door open for an unexpected opportunity.
If the reported move does eventually receive official confirmation, it would represent another major statement of intent from Kaizer Chiefs and could trigger a huge reaction across South African football.
