Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye has shared his thoughts on reports surrounding Itumeleng Khune and Brandon Petersen training together, describing the prospect as something that could greatly benefit the current Amakhosi goalkeeper.
Khune is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in South African football, having spent the majority of his professional career representing Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana. Petersen, meanwhile, has developed into an important figure at Naturena and enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign.
Khanye believes having the two goalkeepers working together could provide Petersen with an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from someone who understands exactly what it takes to perform under the enormous pressure that comes with representing Chiefs.
“If that’s true, that would be great to see. I know Petersen, yinja ye game. I would like to see what experience Khune will pass to him,” Khanye said.
The reported development would be particularly interesting considering the respect that exists between Khune and Petersen. Khune has previously praised Petersen’s performances and encouraged him not to give up after the goalkeeper missed out on Bafana Bafana’s final 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Khanye himself has also become a strong admirer of Petersen’s recent performances. Following Chiefs’ 1-1 league draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in May, the former Amakhosi winger selected Petersen as his Man of the Match and argued that his performances deserved consideration for Bafana Bafana.
For Petersen, learning from Khune could add another dimension to his game. Khune’s experience in major domestic matches, continental competitions and international football means he has plenty of knowledge to share about positioning, leadership, handling pressure and the mentality required at the highest level.
Petersen has previously spoken positively about working alongside strong goalkeepers at Naturena, saying that competition and pushing one another helped his development.
If Khune and Petersen are indeed working closely together again, Khanye believes it could prove beneficial not only for Petersen but potentially for Kaizer Chiefs as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department and build for the future.
