Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has spoken about what it is like to train alongside club legend Itumeleng Khune, describing the experience as something special for him.
For Petersen, Khune is not simply another goalkeeper. He is a player whose career and achievements have made him one of the most respected figures in South African football. Khune spent more than a decade as one of the biggest names between the posts at Kaizer Chiefs and became an inspiration to many young goalkeepers.
Petersen has now revealed how much it means to have the opportunity to learn from someone he admired from a young age.
“He’s such a legend that I’ve wished to play with since from a young age, but the good thing is that he’s here now training me.”
The opportunity is particularly meaningful because Petersen understands the history attached to the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper position. The club has had legendary goalkeepers such as Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernandez and Khune, and Petersen has previously acknowledged the honour of being part of that tradition.
Khune’s experience could also provide Petersen with valuable lessons beyond goalkeeping. His leadership, understanding of the game and knowledge of the demands of playing for Chiefs are qualities that can benefit the current generation.
The relationship between the two goalkeepers has also gone both ways. Khune has publicly praised Petersen’s performances, saying the Chiefs captain has taken his game to another level and has carried the team through his performances.
For Petersen, training with his childhood inspiration is therefore more than just another session at training. It is an opportunity to learn from a legend while continuing to build his own legacy at Kaizer Chiefs.
And with Khune now sharing his experience with him, Petersen will be hoping to take every lesson possible from one of the greatest goalkeepers South Africa has produced.
