Da Cruz Speaks: Two Kaizer Chiefs Players Face Uncertain Futures
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has made it clear that squad changes remain part of his plans as he continues to shape the team for the 2026/27 season.
The French coach, who was officially appointed by Kaizer Chiefs on a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, has already begun implementing his ideas at Naturena.
One of the biggest talking points during the pre-season was the future of Thabo Cele and Glody Lilepo, with both players facing uncertainty under the new technical team.
Da Cruz confirms Cele is not in his plans
Da Cruz was direct when asked about Thabo Cele’s future at the club. The coach explained that Chiefs have several players competing for positions in midfield and that he prefers a different player profile.
As a result, Cele was not included in Da Cruz’s plans for the 2026/27 campaign.
The midfielder’s situation has therefore become one of the key transfer stories surrounding Amakhosi. With the transfer window still open, his next destination could become clearer as discussions continue.
Lilepo also linked with an exit
Glody Lilepo is another player whose future has attracted attention.
Da Cruz confirmed that Lilepo had opportunities elsewhere and that the club was willing to help him explore those possibilities. This indicated that the winger could leave Naturena if a suitable agreement is reached.
Lilepo made a strong impact during his time at Chiefs, meaning a potential departure would represent another significant change to the squad.
Chiefs continue rebuilding
The changes come as Da Cruz attempts to create a squad capable of competing across multiple competitions. Chiefs have already seen several departures during the transfer window, while the coach has also spoken about the need to strengthen his attacking options.
Despite the squad changes, Da Cruz’s tenure has started positively on the field. Chiefs opened their 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign with a 3–1 victory over Kruger United, with Wandile Duba scoring twice after coming off the bench.
The result provided an encouraging start, although Da Cruz stressed that there is still plenty of work to be done as the team continues to adapt to his methods.
For Chiefs supporters, the futures of Cele and Lilepo will be worth watching closely. Until any transfer or contract agreement is officially announced, however, both situations should be treated as ongoing rather than confirmed departures.
With the new season underway, Da Cruz’s squad-building decisions could play an important role in determining whether Amakhosi can challenge for major honours during the 2026/27 campaign.
