Glody Lilepo’s Kaizer Chiefs Exit Explained: The Reason Behind His Departure
Glody Makabi Lilepo’s time at Kaizer Chiefs has come to an end, with the Democratic Republic of Congo international completing a move to Libyan giants Al Ahly Benghazi after the two clubs reached an agreement over a transfer fee.
Lilepo’s departure came after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future at Naturena. The attacker was notably left out of Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season trip to Spain, increasing speculation that he was no longer part of new head coach Fernando Da Cruz’s plans. Da Cruz subsequently confirmed that Lilepo had opportunities to continue his career elsewhere.
The decision was therefore not simply about Chiefs wanting to get rid of one of their key attackers. It was a combination of the player’s situation under the new technical team, interest from clubs outside South Africa and an opportunity for Chiefs to secure a transfer fee rather than risk losing the player later.
Lilepo had reportedly attracted interest from clubs in North Africa, with Al Ahly Benghazi eventually emerging as the destination. The Libyan club completed the deal in August, bringing an end to the Congolese forward’s spell with Amakhosi.
Why did Lilepo leave?
One of the biggest factors was the change in the technical setup at Kaizer Chiefs. With Da Cruz taking charge and reshaping the squad for the 2026/27 campaign, Lilepo’s position became uncertain. His absence from the pre-season camp was an early indication that his future was no longer at the centre of the coach’s plans.
There was also strong interest from abroad. Rather than keeping an unhappy or uncertain player, Chiefs ultimately agreed to sell him to Al Ahly Benghazi, allowing the club to benefit financially from the transfer.
Lilepo leaves Chiefs after making a significant contribution during his time at the club. He arrived from French side Valenciennes in January 2025 and quickly became an important attacking option for Amakhosi.
While some supporters were disappointed to see him leave, others felt the club had made the correct decision given the circumstances. His departure now leaves Chiefs with the task of finding another attacking player capable of filling the void he has left behind.
It is worth noting that while reports have extensively explained the circumstances surrounding the transfer, a detailed public statement from Lilepo himself giving a personal explanation for the exit has not been clearly established in the reliable reports reviewed. What is confirmed is that the transfer was agreed between the two clubs and that Lilepo has officially moved to Al Ahly Benghazi.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the Lilepo chapter is officially closed. For the Congolese attacker, a new chapter begins in Libya — and all eyes will now be on whether he can reproduce the form that made him such an important figure at Naturena. 🔥
