Langelihle Phili Opens Up on Chiefs Move
Langelihle Phili’s move to Kaizer Chiefs may have taken time to materialise, but the talented winger was reportedly always keen on making the switch to Naturena.
The 21-year-old eventually completed his move from Stellenbosch FC to Amakhosi in August 2026 after weeks of negotiations between the two clubs. Chiefs confirmed the signing on August 3, describing Phili as a highly sought-after young winger.
Phili’s arrival followed a difficult period of negotiations, with Stellenbosch initially reluctant to part ways with one of their most promising players. Reports indicated that the Cape Winelands club preferred either an overseas move or for Phili to remain and see out his contract.
However, Phili remained interested in joining Chiefs. The winger had strong personal reasons for wanting to wear the famous Gold and Black, having grown up supporting Amakhosi alongside his late grandmother.
Speaking after completing the move, Phili revealed that joining Chiefs was effectively a dream come true.
«“Everyone at home supports Amakhosi, so I thought it would be a good move for me to join the team I grew up supporting.”»
The negotiations eventually reached a breakthrough after Chiefs improved their proposal, with Ashley Du Preez and Given Msimango included in the eventual deal that allowed Phili to make the move to Naturena.
Before his departure, Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt acknowledged how difficult it would be to lose the youngster, describing Phili as one of the hottest properties in South African football and pointing to contractual circumstances surrounding the situation.
Phili now has the opportunity to prove himself at one of the biggest clubs in South African football. After scoring nine goals and winning both Stellenbosch’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards during the previous campaign, expectations are high around his arrival.
For Phili, the long wait is finally over. The player who wanted the move can now focus on making his mark in the famous Kaizer Chiefs colours.
