Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has once again addressed criticism surrounding the number of Mamelodi Sundowns players included in his national team selections, insisting that his decisions are guided by footballing facts rather than personal relationships or loyalty to his former club.
The coach has faced questions from supporters who believe Sundowns players receive greater consideration than footballers from other leading clubs, particularly Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The debate has intensified following the latest squad announcement, which included a strong Sundowns contingent.
Speaking on SABC Sport, Mosimane rejected suggestions that he selects players simply because he previously worked with them at Chloorkop. He explained that choosing a national team is a demanding responsibility and that supporters do not always see the detailed assessment behind every decision.
Mosimane maintained that he works with facts and takes full responsibility for the players he selects. His position is that players must be judged on what they offer the national team, rather than on the badge they represent at club level.
Sundowns’ significant presence in the squad has nevertheless kept the conversation alive. Some fans argue that Pirates and Chiefs also have talented players who deserve opportunities, while others believe the coach should select whichever footballers best fit his tactical plans and current requirements.
The discussion has also raised questions about whether players from Pirates and Chiefs are adapting sufficiently to the demands of international football. However, claims that Mosimane said Pirates players must learn professional football from Sundowns, or that no Kaizer Chiefs player is good enough for Bafana Bafana, have not been confirmed in the reports available. Those remarks should therefore not be presented as direct quotes from the coach.
As important international fixtures approach for the national side, Mosimane’s selections will ultimately be judged by performances and results on the pitch. Supporters will continue to debate which clubs deserve greater representation, but the national team’s priority must remain selecting a competitive squad capable of representing South Africa with pride.
Do you agree with Mosimane’s selection approach, or should more players from Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs be given opportunities?
