Pitso Mosimane’s strong start with Bafana Bafana has sparked a major conversation around the national team’s defensive options.
Following Bafana Bafana’s impressive performances, Mosimane has reportedly indicated that if the current defenders continue delivering at this level, there may be little reason to rush back experienced players such as Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Siyabonga Ngezana.
The message is clear: performance will be the biggest factor in selection. Mosimane has already shown a willingness to trust players who are performing well, while competition for places in the Bafana squad continues to increase.
Mbokazi remains an important young defender, while Ngezana brings international and European experience. However, with the current defensive group showing consistency, both players may have to fight hard to reclaim their places.
Bafana have started the new Mosimane era strongly, including a 5–0 victory over Eritrea and a 1–0 win over Egypt, making the competition for places even more intense.
For Mosimane, nobody is guaranteed a place — the shirt belongs to those who continue performing.
