Relebohile Mofokeng has reportedly responded to the recent criticism and comments surrounding the selection of Orlando Pirates players under Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane, with the discussion once again raising questions about player selection, positional roles and the balance between club performances and national-team football.
Mosimane recently spoke about Kamogelo Sebelebele’s role, explaining that the Orlando Pirates right-back normally operates further forward for his club but was instructed to play a more disciplined role for Bafana Bafana. Sebelebele subsequently delivered a strong performance and was named Man of the Match against Guinea.
According to the claims surrounding Mofokeng’s response, the former Pirates attacker questioned whether certain players should be receiving regular opportunities and suggested that some selections could be influenced by their previous association with Mamelodi Sundowns. Players such as Bathusi Aubaas have reportedly been brought into the discussion, with concerns being raised about whether selection should be based purely on current form, tactical requirements and performances.
The comments have generated debate among supporters, particularly because Mosimane has repeatedly emphasised that national-team football requires coaches to make decisions based on the specific demands of each match. His recent explanation regarding Sebelebele reflects that approach, with the coach stressing that players may be asked to perform roles different from those they usually occupy at club level.
Mofokeng’s reported position, however, highlights another side of the debate: whether players should be selected primarily because of their quality and current form, regardless of which club they represent. The issue has become increasingly relevant as Bafana Bafana looks to build a competitive squad while introducing players capable of performing in different tactical systems.
Mosimane has also publicly praised Mofokeng’s versatility, describing his ability to operate in different attacking positions and noting his development from a winger into a central role.
Ultimately, the debate surrounding Sebelebele, Aubaas, Mofokeng and other players reflects the difficult decisions facing the national-team coaching staff. Selection remains a matter for the technical team, but the discussion demonstrates the high expectations surrounding Bafana Bafana and the demand from supporters for players to be judged on performances, tactical suitability and consistency.
