South African football continues to produce coaches capable of competing at the highest level of the African game, and the CAF Champions League is once again providing the perfect stage to showcase their tactical quality.
Three familiar names from the Premier Soccer League — Rulani Mokwena, Steve Barker and Manqoba Mngqithi — have guided their respective clubs into the second preliminary round of Africa’s premier club competition.
🇪🇬 Rulani Mokwena — Pyramids FC
Mokwena’s Pyramids FC delivered an emphatic performance, defeating Gor Mahia 5–1 and advancing with a commanding 7–1 aggregate victory. Their next challenge will be El Merriekh Bentiu of South Sudan.
🇹🇿 Steve Barker — Simba SC
Barker’s Simba SC were equally impressive, recording a 6–1 victory over Mighty Wanderers to complete a 7–1 aggregate triumph. They now await 15 de Agosto or Fomboni FC.
🇹🇿 Manqoba Mngqithi — Young Africans
Mngqithi’s Young Africans secured their progression with a 2–1 victory over Gaborone United, winning the tie 3–2 on aggregate. Their next opponents will be CFFA of Madagascar.
Three South African tacticians, three major African clubs, and one shared achievement: progression in the CAF Champions League.
Their journeys underline the influence of South African coaching on the continent and demonstrate how PSL experience can translate into success on the African stage. The road ahead will become increasingly demanding, but all three have now taken another important step toward the group stages.
