Kaizer Chiefs Coach Backs Brandon Petersen After Difficult Night

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has backed goalkeeper and captain Brandon Petersen following a difficult evening in the Betway Premiership, insisting that the experienced shot-stopper can bounce back and produce a stronger performance in the club’s next fixture.

Petersen came under scrutiny during Chiefs’ 2-2 draw against Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium, with the goalkeeper involved in the opening goal after struggling to clear a back pass on a rain-soaked pitch. The wet conditions made the surface difficult to control, while Richards Bay took advantage of the mistake.

Despite the criticism surrounding his performance, Da Cruz’s message is understood to be one of confidence rather than panic. The coach believes Petersen simply needs to remain focused, learn from the difficult moments and continue working hard.

“I don’t see an issue about him. He just needs to stay focused. Remember, it was raining also in that match, so obviously it reduced his performance, but I believe in his next match he will do well,” the coach said, according to the statement provided.

The comments come at an important moment for Petersen, who has previously established himself as an important figure within the Chiefs squad. As captain, his responsibility extends beyond making saves, with the goalkeeper also expected to provide leadership and confidence to the defensive unit.

The Richards Bay match was particularly frustrating for Chiefs because they twice came from behind but could only secure a point. Da Cruz acknowledged that his side made costly mistakes but also praised the team’s overall performance and determination to fight back.

For Petersen, the focus will now be on responding positively. Goalkeepers are often judged heavily after mistakes, but Da Cruz appears determined to give his captain the backing required to regain his confidence.

The next match could therefore provide Petersen with an opportunity to answer his critics on the pitch and remind supporters why the technical team continues to trust him.
